Capital of the province of the same name, in central-west Sardinia, Oristano is one of the island's main cities. It is well-known for the excellent meat and fish dishes of its local cuisine – in particular for bottarga, the dried grey mullet roe produced in Cabras – and for its traditional costumes and folk traditions. The city's most significant event is an equestrian tournament, Sa Sartiglia, held on Mardi Gras.
